Teaching Program of the Department of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language

I. Introduction to the Department of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language

The College of Liberal Arts of Lanzhou City College comprises four departments of Chinese Language, Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Secretary and Public Education. The Department of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language has a complete team of teaching staff and faculty members, totally 16 full-time teachers.

There are 3 persons owning doctorate degrees and 13 ones with master's degrees; 3 professors, 7 associate professors and 6 lecturers. They have published hundreds of papers on various academic journals, such as Chinese Language, Dialect, Language Science, Journal of Lanzhou University and Journal of Northwest Normal University, as well as textbooks and academic monographs, up to 10 kinds.

Now, the Department of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language enrolls foreign students and carries out the Chinese teaching and training programs. All the teachers in charge are with above Medium Professional Titles (master above)

II. Classes Setup of Learning Chinese as a Foreign Language

• Long-term Class: Basic, intermediate , advanced grades setup by students’ Chinese level

• Short-term Class 1: 6 months-12 months, specialized training and advanced class of Chinese

• Short-term Class 2: 1 month- 6 months, specialized training and advanced class of Chinese

III. Courses Setup of Learning Chinese as a Foreign Language

1. Long-term Class: Learning for more than 12 months, including basic, intermediate, advanced classes.

(1). Basic Class: The students should be the foreign students, non-Chinese speakers. The teaching goal is helping students master the language to some extents by one-term learning. The students will possess the basic listening, speaking and communication skills, which can meet the students’ demands in ordinary social environments, such as daily life and studying in China. students’ listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

Basic Oral Chinese

students on basic oral Chinese so as to enable students to get basic listening and speaking skills.

Chinese Characters Base

It is the specialized training course which focuses on the structures of characters and writing

rules so as to enhance the skills of students’ writing and reading.

(2). Intermediate Class: The teaching targets should be the students who have learned Chinese and can express with around 1200 Chinese characters to some degrees, but with bad grammar and not accurate words and sentences. By one term learning, they can master Chinese language better and get primary reading skills. At the end of the term, they can meet the 3rd level Chinese of Level Standards and Grade Grammar Outline stipulated by HSK. The details listed below:

The basic comprehensive course set for students who have attained basic Chinese level so as to enhance

students’ comprehensive skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing to the full and enlarge their

(3). Advanced Class: The teaching targets are sophomores, whose major is Learning Chinese as a Foreign Language and advanced foreign students of the same level. The teaching goal is to help students further enlarge vocabulary and strengthen, add and expand basic grammar points and enhance their skills of reading original Chinese literature gradually so as to use Chinese language, structure and more complicated sentence patters and paragraphs to express ideas on one field or subject correctly and accurately. We will help students increase the communication skill continuously. At the end of term, they can meet the 4th level of Chinese Level Standards and Grade Grammar Outline stipulated by HSK. So besides the basic courses on listening, speaking and reading, the courses for passing the exam will be prepared. The details listed below:

intermediate level and masters basic Chinese grammar. The course focuses on strengthening
